Famed castle in New York’s Central Park closes for repairs

An iconic castle in Central Park has closed for the rest of the year to undergo a $6 million restoration.

The Belvedere Castle restoration project is aimed at addressing various drainage and water issues, according to WABC-TV.

Officials have said the castle was last restored in 1983. The project will work to restore the castle’s masonry and to modernize mechanical systems by installing a geothermal heating system.

A future phase will include more accessible route to the structure. The Central Park Conservancy says it hopes to have the current work done by mid-2019.

The stone castle was designed in 1865 as a Victorian folly, a structure meant to grab attention but with little purpose beyond that, according to CentralPark.com. Since 1919, the National Weather Service has been taking Manhattan’s temperature from the castle tower.
