National security adviser H.R. McMaster rumored to be leaving White House

National security adviser H.R. McMaster is rumored to be leaving the White House as early as next month, according to a report.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis are coordinating the effort to replace him, according to insiders, NBC reported Thursday.

Kelly recently asked the Pentagon about a potential role for McMaster in the military, according to a Bloomberg report.

McMaster, who is a three-star army lieutenant general, could be promoted to a four-star ranking as the Defense Department looks for a possible opening.

Pentagon may let McMaster return to military amid Trump tensions

The anticipated shakeup would be the latest in a series of staff changes at President Trump’s White House.

Auto industry executive Stephen Biegun is reportedly the top candidate to assume McMaster’s role.

He would be President Trump’s third security adviser.

McMaster replaced Michael Flynn, who resigned after 24 days in office, over revelations that he lied about his contacts with Russian officials.

H.R. McMaster says Russian meddling is ‘incontrovertible’

Trump lashed out at McMaster after the General said there was “incontrovertible” evidence that Russia had interfered in the U.S. election.

“General McMaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the Russians and that the only Collusion was between Russia and Crooked H, the DNC and the Dems,” Trump tweeted.

The White House released a statement calling Thursday’s report “fake news.”

“I was just with President Trump and H.R. McMaster in the Oval Office. President Trump said that the NBC News story is ‘fake news,’ and told McMaster that he is doing a great job,” White House spokesman Michael Anton said.
